Two Mount, 16 Module, Grid-Tied System in Colorado’s Western Slope

There are a lot of reasons why solar racking might not be ideal for some roofs. Size constraints, incompatible materials, and an orientation that doesn’t suit output are a few common reasons.

But, installing solar on the ground can be about more than bypassing roof limits. Ground solar mounts also provide capabilities that amount to better performance and responsiveness to environmental factors like snow, which is no small advantage in places like Colorado’s Western Slope.

The owners of Moore Cabin in Cimarron, CO wanted solar power. But after getting in touch with Monrose-based electrical contractor and solar installer, C.A.M. Electric, they learned that roof racking was not a suitable option for the 16-module module system required for their output goals.

C.A.M Electric instead designed two MT Solar ground mounts, each supporting an eight-module array. Both mounts are connected to a grid-tied system with a Sol-Ark 15k and a 38 kWh Homegrid battery backup.

Beyond providing a workaround to roof racking, the ground mounts offer the added benefit of adjustability. With the freedom to tilt each array to the optimal angle for the season, the system facilitates higher output throughout the year, as well as lower maintenance during the Colorado winters.

The ability to position the mounts so that snow freely slides off the modules prevents accumulation from hindering sun exposure. Higher ground clearance also eliminates the need to clear any build-up below the array.

This project is one of many completed by C.A.M. Electric Inc. that showcases the installer’s expertise in realizing high-value solar photovoltaic systems. Since 2002, it has delivered clean, reliable energy solutions for homes and businesses throughout western Colorado.
